If you're wondering how to change differential fluid, it can be a tedious task. From start to finish it will typically take around 2 hours, there are a few details to pay attention to, and there is some risk involved. To start with, it's best to drive the car for 15 or 20 minutes to get the tiny metal shavings settled in the oil so that they drain with the oil. But this also means that the drivetrain, along with the exhaust system, will be hot, which presents some danger to taking on this task. Besides the risk of burns, many vehicles will have to be lifted off the ground, which presents an even greater risk. At The Auto Repair centers, we have special tools that minimize such risks, and trained technicians with the knowledge to do the job safely and properly. We'd be more than happy to take care of this maintenance for you!
Fredericktowne How to Change Differential Fluid Steps
If you're comfortable working with cars and still want to perform your own maintenance, but don't yet know how to change differential fluid, then here are the basics. Once the drivetrain is warmed up you can begin the process of draining the fluid. Be sure your car is parked on a level surface. If it needs to be raised off the ground, be sure the car is level on the jacks. Place an oil pan beneath the drain plug, and remove the plug. Use caution-the oil will be hot. Allow all the oil to drain. In the mean time, clean the drain plug and keep your eye out for large pieces of metal. It is normal to find a very fine metallic paste held by the magnet on the drain plug, but any larger metal shavings could indicate impending issues.
Once all the oil has drained you may replace the drain plug. Be sure to observe factory torque specification. Next you'll remove the fill plug and add factory recommended differential oil until it is level with the fill hole. Replace the fill plug, again observing factory torque specification, and you're done!
Bear in mind that we at your local Fredericktowne Auto Repair centers have special tools and knowledge of how to change differential fluid efficiently and safely. We'd love to take care of it for you!
